Bio Ritmo is recognized around the globe as a leader in the “new ‘old school’ Salsa movement and considered by many as one of the “few pioneers and the most innovative [Salsa] band out there” (Aguzate.org, Chicago). With the return of creative director Rei Alvarez in 2003 and after a four-year recording hiatus, Bio Ritmo self-released their award winning eponymous CD, which included hit songs “Hermano” and “Atrevete”.

Alvarez, a native of Ponce, Puerto Rico, is also the lead singer, composer, visual artist and DJ. Together with veteran timbale master/musical director Giustino Riccio, pianist/composer Marlysse Simmons-Argaˆ±dona and trombonist/composer Tobias Whitaker, they lead the group in writing songs that have been described as “truly inventive song-writing” (Eye Weekly, Toronto), “a classy mass of pulsating rhythm” (Village Voice), “unmistakably danceable” (Montreal Mirror) and have helped renew an international interest in a return to the raw, experimental 70′s style Salsa sound.

Besides a deep appreciation and understanding of Afro-Latin music, Bio Ritmo’s members come from eclectic mix of musical backgrounds that attributes to the band’s fresh, unique and soulful sound. They are one of the few Salsa bands that can successfully push the boundaries of this timeless musical genre while at the same time “preserving its roots while keeping an eye on the future”” (Latin Beat Magazine). Not many Salsa bands attract such a varied, far-reaching listening audience while still maintaining the highest respected and admiration of Latin music aficionados. It’s Funky, it’s Salsa Dura, Afro-Latin, Dance Music with a touch of Samba, Arabic, Afro-Beat, Sci-Fi and Rock&Roll flavor. There is no other Salsa band like Bio Ritmo.

We are excited to invite you to the Second Annual Salsa Competition in Harrisonburg!!!
This is a competition that will be open to the public, anyone can participate there is no registration fee . If you are interested please E-mail me your name and your partner’s name.
Competition Regulations
1. To participate, dancers MUST be amateurs over 18 years old.
2. Professional dancers are not allowed to participate. Professional dancers are those individuals who have been paid to teach or perform salsa dancing. This income represents 50% or more of their individual earnings.
3. There will only be room for 10 competing couples, registered on a first-come first-serve basis
4. Dancers need to be at the Dodger by 9:00 pm competition will be start by 9:30 pm
5. Trophy, prizes and certificates for participation will be given at the end of the competition as follows:
First prize: $200.00 in gift certificates
Second prize: $100.00 in gift certificates
Third prize: $ 50.00 in gift certificates
6. There will be three judges. Dancers will start with free style salsa and then 5 couples will be picked for the final round.
The selected couples will have to dance individually to a 4-5 minutes song they pick out previously. (Please give your CD to the DJ before competition start.)
Judges will evaluate choreography, connection, technique and outfit match.
